Our kids kitesurfing lessons are structured differently to adult lessons. This is partly because children learn faster and have shorter attention spans than adults. Most importantly, it's because kids need a greater degree of personal attention to ensure their safety.
The Graykite Cape Town team has been teaching the young and young at heart to kitesurf for over 15 years. This wealth of experience has informed our unique approach to kitesurfing lessons for kids between the ages of 6 and 12.
The warm, shallow lagoons at Langebaan are an ideal place for kids to learn. The shallow water means the instructor can stay hands on and leashed to the student for hundreds of metres from the shore and the steady, reliable wind means that kids don’t have to stand around getting bored or worry about gusty conditions.
What's different about teaching kids to kitesurf?
Children are impressionable, adaptable and tend to progress quickly. This is largely due to their sense of adventure, highly adaptable motor skills and lust for fun. Most children decide after their first lesson whether kitesurfing is for them which is why our kids kitesurfing lessons are designed to let them experience what it’s all about.
Kids lessons are shorter than the adult lessons, usually 2 hours. This means the children remain captivated throughout the lesson. We don’t want to burn them out mentally or physically. Safety is our top priority when planning kids kitesurfing lessons.
How old do you need to be to learn to kitesurf?
Kids should usually be at least 6 years old when they take their first lesson and we put in place many extra safety measures when teaching youngsters. We use a retractable leash throughout their kite and board training which ensures your children are always physically attached to an experienced instructor.
As our young students progress they will be offered more independence, but only when both instructor and youngster are both fully confident they are safe. Graykite’s teaching methodology focuses on positive affirmation in a safe and secure learning environment. This allows youngsters to quickly excel and learn to share our passion for kitesurfing.
To maximize safety and progress we always teach children to kitesurf in private or semi-private lessons. This ensures there are never more than 2 kids with each instructor which is vital to ensure the highest levels of safety and that they get the direct supervision they need to progress.
Do we need to do any preparation?
The only thing kids really need is the desire to learn and passion to have fun. Well, that and expert tuition! High adrenaline fun in a super-safe environment makes learning to kitesurf the experience of a lifetime for many children. Hopefully that’s what they’ll tell you and all their friends back at school!
That said, there are some things that can help kids to learn more quickly. These include sports like skateboarding, snowboarding and small kite flying. Also, any activities that help build balance and co-ordination will help them to master the kite and board – for instance, ballet, football or gymnastics. But there's nothing specific you or they need to do to prepare.
